Stewartia

The genus Stewartia is less well known but is one of our favourites. Stewartia is mostly a deciduous shrub or small tree related to the more familiar Camellia. Hence the name of the most often planted Stewartia: Stewartia pseudocamellia which means “the false Camellia”.

There are however several other species worth growing: e.g. Stewartia malacodendron, Stewartia monadelpha, Stewartia sinensis and Stewartia serrata. Because of their beautiful bark, charming flowers and outstanding autumn colors, these are wonderful plants for every season.
